Bat Pictures

Some years ago, a common notion was that bats had no feathers, but after study on them, it was clear that they are birds and they do have feathers. They are warm-blooded mammals and have fur too. They also nurse their babies. An amazing thing about bats is that they are the only flying mammals.

Vampire bats are probably the most talked about bats. Contrary to the notion, these bats are not like Dracula etc. In fact they almost never bite people or kill any other prey. They just wound horses, cows or other mammals and lick its blood. Their capacity per night is not more than approximately 1 ounce blood. Other than this one, there exist about 1000 species and these creatures can be found in cities, forests as well as deserts.

Some species rely on insects and small fishes etc, while others eat only fruits. They generally eat at night time and sleep during day. Their sleeping place is known as roost. Their sleeping posture is upside-down hanging. Except for a few types, bats prefer sleeping in large groups. So far, the largest known colony of these creatures is in Texas; Bracken Cave.

The babies of bats are known as pups and like humans; a female can give birth to just one or sometimes twin babies. Newborns have no hair and they are pink in color. They rely on milk from mothers. If any baby lose grip of roost or cave, it falls and dies. This is why they possess very strong claws and legs.
